Wigley hull form used as analytical benchmark.
The parabolic wedge waterline describes the Wigley hull, the classic mathematical hull whose surface is given in closed form, with parabolic waterlines and parabolic vertical sections, symmetric fore and aft. Because the geometry is an explicit algebraic equation rather than a faired offsets table, it is the standard analytical benchmark for ship-hydrodynamics methods: Michell thin-ship wave resistance, panel and Rankine-source codes, and viscous CFD are all validated against measured Wigley-hull resistance and wave patterns. The parabolic waterplane gives a fine entrance and run with no parallel middle body, so it isolates wave-making cleanly. It is a research test case, not a buildable cargo form, and its towing-tank data are among the most reproduced reference results in the field.
