Simulation of pollutant plumes in water or air.
Plume modeling simulates the trajectory, dilution, and concentration field of a continuous or transient discharge plume in water or air. Near-field models resolve buoyant jet behavior at an outfall, riser, or subsea blowout, where momentum and density difference dominate; far-field models then advect and diffuse the diluted plume with ambient currents. Applications include sewage and brine outfalls, produced-water discharges, dredge-spoil plumes, and subsea oil-and-gas releases. The output, a concentration field against distance, is compared to a mixing-zone boundary or a toxicity threshold such as a PNEC to assess compliance and environmental risk.
