Mandatory under MARPOL Annex I-V.
The environmental part of the Polar Code (Part II-A) makes additional pollution-prevention requirements mandatory through amendments to MARPOL Annexes I, II, IV, and V, adopted by MEPC.265(68) and in force from 1 January 2017. In Arctic and Antarctic waters it prohibits any discharge of oil and oily mixtures, tightens noxious liquid substance and sewage discharge, and restricts garbage discharge. From 1 July 2024 a ban on the use and carriage of heavy fuel oil applies in Arctic waters under MEPC.329(76), with waivers and an exemption window to mid-2029. The safety part is mandatory through SOLAS Chapter XIV.
