Pollution prevention certificate
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Generic term for MARPOL certificates.
Pollution prevention certificate is an informal umbrella term for the MARPOL statutory certificates, not a single certificate in its own right. The real distinct certificates are the International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate (IOPP) under Annex I, the International Pollution Prevention Certificate for the Carriage of Noxious Liquid Substances under Annex II, the International Sewage Pollution Prevention Certificate (ISPP) under Annex IV, and the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate (IAPP) under Annex VI. Each is tied to its own survey regime, valid up to five years, and listed in a supplement of equipment and arrangements. Port state control checks the relevant certificates for the ship type and the annexes that apply.
