Radar Reflector

F5. The Reference Layer: Glossary, Units, Signals and Information Sources

Definition

Passive device enhancing radar return.

A radar reflector is a passive corner-reflector array that returns a strong radar echo from a small or low-radar-cross-section craft such as a yacht, liferaft, or buoy. SOLAS V/19 requires one on ships under 150 GT where practicable; the octahedral reflector must be mounted in the ‘catch-rain’ attitude to present three perpendicular faces. Modern radar target enhancers (RTE) actively amplify the return. A fiberglass hull without a reflector can be invisible on a larger ship’s radar in clutter.
