RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System)

D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resources

Definition

Closed system reusing treated water.

A recirculating aquaculture system grows fish in tanks while continuously filtering and reusing the water, typically recycling more than 90% of it through mechanical screens, biofilters that convert ammonia to nitrate, and oxygenation. RAS isolates the crop from wild stocks, parasites, and effluent discharge, which lets operators site land-based salmon farms near markets. The trade-off is high capital cost and energy demand for pumping and water treatment, plus the risk of a single system failure killing a whole batch.
