Repair Yard Stations

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Categorization of repair yards.

Repair yard stations describe how a ship-repair yard is organized into work stations or berths, dry docks, repair quays, and afloat positions, and how repair yards themselves are categorized by capability and size. A yard’s capacity is set by its dock dimensions (length, beam, depth over keel blocks), crane reach, and the trades it holds in-house against those it subcontracts. Owners pick a repair yard from this profile to match the docking scope in the repair specification: a small afloat-repair quay for a wash and minor steel, a large graving dock for a full special survey with heavy renewal. Dock dimensions are the hard limit on which ships a station can take.
