RoRo ramp

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

Stern, side, or quarter ramp for RoRo operations.

A ro-ro ramp is the inclined bridge that lets wheeled cargo drive between a roll-on roll-off ship and the quay, fitted on the vessel as a stern, quarter, or side ramp, or fixed ashore as a shore ramp or linkspan. The shore linkspan is a hinged span carried on the quay at one end and on a pontoon, lift towers, or a counterweight at the other, so it follows the tide and the ship’s changing draft while keeping the gradient drivable, commonly below about one in eight for laden trailers. Design checks the axle loads of the heaviest unit, the articulation range over the tidal and draft envelope, and the connection forces into the quay.
