The Route du Rhum is a solo transatlantic race from Saint-Malo, France to Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, about 3,540 nautical miles, first run in 1978 and held every four years. It is sailed singlehanded across classes including the giant Ultim trimarans, IMOCA 60s, Ocean Fifty multihulls, and Class40s. The 1978 inaugural edition was won by Mike Birch by a margin of 98 seconds. It is one of the marquee French offshore races.
