Sail Tie

A sail tie (also gasket or sail stop) is a short length of webbing or line used to bundle and secure a lowered or furled sail. After dropping the mainsail onto the boom, the crew passes ties around the flaked sail at intervals to hold it until it is bagged or covered; ties also secure a furled headsail or lash gear on deck. Traditional gaskets were rope; modern ties are flat webbing with a tab-and-loop or hook-and-loop fastening for quick release. The older term gasket survives from square-rig practice of stowing sails on the yard.
