Sea of Galilee Boat
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
First-century CE Israeli vessel find from 1986.
A 1st-century AD wooden fishing boat found in the mud of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) in 1986 during a drought that dropped the water level. Sometimes called the “Jesus boat” for its period, it measures about 8.2 by 2.3 meters and is built mainly of cedar and oak in mortise-and-tenon construction. Excavated in 11 days as the water rose, it was conserved in a PEG bath over several years and is displayed at the Yigal Allon Museum, Kibbutz Ginosar.
