Sea Stallion from Glendalough
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Modern reconstruction of Skuldelev 2 longship.
A sailing reconstruction of Skuldelev 2, a Viking longship of about AD 1042 built of oak felled near Dublin (Glendalough, Ireland). The replica, launched in 2004 by the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, is about 30 meters long and crewed by roughly 60. In 2007 to 2008 it sailed from Roskilde to Dublin and back as an experimental-archaeology test of the original ship’s performance, rig, and crew demands. The Skuldelev ships were excavated from a blockage in Roskilde Fjord in 1962.
