Seine Net
D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resourcesDefinition
Encircling fishing net.
A seine net is a surrounding net deployed in a curve to encircle fish, then closed or hauled to concentrate the catch, a family that includes the purse seine, the Danish (anchor) seine, the Scottish seine, and the beach seine. Unlike a trawl, a seine is not towed for long distances; it surrounds a school or sweeps a defined area of bottom. Seines are size-selective mainly through mesh and hauling speed rather than escape devices, so management relies on mesh limits, area restrictions, and, for purse seines, FAD controls to limit juvenile and non-target catch.
