Ship Construction File

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS II-1/3-10 for tankers and bulk carriers.

The Ship Construction File (SCF) is the package of as-built structural information kept on board and ashore through a ship’s service life. SOLAS II-1/3-10, adopted by resolution MSC.290(87) and in force 1 January 2012, requires it for oil tankers and bulk carriers of 150 m in length and above for which the building contract is placed on or after 1 July 2016, as part of compliance with the Goal-Based Ship Construction Standards in MSC.287(87). The file records the structural design, scantlings, materials, and the design life and corrosion margins, supporting inspection and repair. It excludes ore carriers and combination carriers.
