SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter)

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Heavy load mover for block transport.

A self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) is a computer-steered, hydraulically suspended multi-axle platform vehicle that moves fully fabricated hull blocks, superstructure modules, and heavy machinery around a shipyard and onto building docks or barges. Modules couple side by side and end to end to scale axle lines to the load, each axle pair steering and self-leveling so the deck stays flat over uneven ground and the load shares evenly. SPMTs let yards build large grand blocks away from the berth and roll them into place, cutting berth occupancy. Payloads run into thousands of tonnes across enough axle lines. Ground bearing pressure and route planning are the controlling constraints.
