Standpipe

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

Vertical pipe for marine bunkering.

A standpipe is a vertical pipe riser on a quay, jetty, or dolphin that brings a service to deck level for connection to a ship, most often fuel for bunkering, fresh water, or a fire main. The bunkering standpipe terminates at a manifold with isolation valves, a sample point, and a hose or loading-arm connection, and is bonded and earthed to control static during fuel transfer. Sizing follows the required transfer rate and the product, with pressure rating and material set by the service. On a fire main, standpipes at spaced intervals feed hydrants along the berth. Layout and spill containment follow port bunkering rules and the terminal’s safety case.
