Tonne

F5. The Reference Layer: Glossary, Units, Signals and Information Sources

Definition

Metric ton of 1000 kilograms.

The tonne is the metric ton, 1,000 kg, the SI-coherent mass unit used throughout maritime cargo work, bunker quantities, and tonnage-adjacent calculations. It differs from the long ton (1,016.05 kg) still seen in some older deadweight figures and the short ton (907.18 kg) used in the United States. Deadweight, displacement, and cargo intake on modern vessels are quoted in tonnes; bunker stems are measured in metric tonnes by weight, corrected from volume at 15 degrees C.
