Tournament fishing is organized competitive recreational angling in which entrants fish under fixed rules and a defined time window to win prizes by total weight, length, or number of qualifying fish. Common formats include bass tournaments and offshore billfish events, many run as live-release or catch-and-release contests using livewells, circle hooks, and weigh-and-release protocols to limit mortality. Fisheries agencies regulate tournaments through permits, bag and size limits, and release-survival rules, and use catch reports as fishery-dependent data. Concentrated effort and handling stress can raise post-release mortality, so well-managed events score for fish condition and penalize dead fish.
