Trial trip
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
Builder's sea trial.
The trial trip is the builder’s sea trial, the voyage on which the yard proves the completed ship at sea before it is offered to the owner for acceptance. It runs the progressive speed trial, the maneuvering set (turning circles, zig-zag, crash-stop, astern running), the steering-gear and anchor-windlass tests, the endurance run, and the vibration and noise survey, with class and the owner’s representatives aboard. Speed and power are corrected under ISO 15016:2015. The trial-trip protocol records the measured values that the acceptance trial then tests against the contract guarantees, and any defect found is added to the punch list.
