UNCLOS Article 76
D2. Hydrography, tides, waves, bathymetry and marine geologyDefinition
Provision defining the outer limits of the continental shelf.
Article 76 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea defines the legal continental shelf and the rules for extending it beyond 200 nautical miles. A coastal state may claim the natural prolongation of its land territory to the outer edge of the continental margin, using sediment-thickness and foot-of-slope formulae, but bounded by a 350-nautical-mile or depth-plus-100-mile cap. Extended claims are reviewed by the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
