Voith Schneider retrofit

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

VSP installation on tugs.

A Voith Schneider retrofit replaces a ship’s conventional propeller and rudder with a Voith Schneider Propeller, a cycloidal drive with vertical blades on a rotating disk that vary their pitch each revolution to produce thrust in any direction without a separate rudder. It is fitted to tugs, ferries, and offshore vessels that need fast, precise station-keeping and full omnidirectional control. The retrofit is structural: it needs a flat bottom recess, a reinforced hull seat, the gearbox and drive train, and class approval of the foundation and shafting. The payoff is response time and maneuverability; the cost is propulsive efficiency lower than an azimuth thruster at transit speed.
