Voluntary Service Award Schemes

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

National long-service awards.

Voluntary-service award schemes recognize long or distinguished service by seafarers and shore staff with medals, certificates, or honors, typically for completed sea time, loyalty to an employer, or service to welfare causes. UK examples are administered through bodies such as the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, alongside national long-service awards. These schemes are discretionary and reputational, separate from the statutory entitlements (wages, leave, repatriation) guaranteed under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006; they reward service rather than confer a legal right.
