Watertight Door
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Type A or B per SOLAS II-1/13.
A watertight door is a door in a watertight subdivision bulkhead designed to hold back water under the full head it would face if the adjacent compartment floods. SOLAS II-1/13 and II-1/13-1 govern their type, location, control, and indication below the bulkhead deck. Power-operated sliding doors of the required class are used where the door may be open at sea, with closing in not more than 60 seconds, local and bridge control, position indicators on the bridge, and an audible warning during closing. The number and arrangement follow from the subdivision and damage stability calculations. Doors are exercised weekly and logged.
