Waypoint
F5. The Reference Layer: Glossary, Units, Signals and Information SourcesDefinition
Programmed position on a passage plan.
A waypoint is a position entered in the passage plan and the ECDIS or GPS route, defining a leg’s start, end, or turn. Each waypoint carries a latitude and longitude, often a wheel-over point and a cross-track-error limit, and a planned course and speed to the next. A safe passage plan checks every leg between waypoints against charted depths, traffic schemes, and no-go areas, not just the waypoints themselves, since the danger usually lies on the leg, not at the mark.
