SMAW low-hydrogen electrode.
E7018 is a low-hydrogen, iron-powder, basic-coated SMAW electrode under AWS A5.1, the standard stick electrode for hull and structural steel. In the designation E70-1-8: E is electrode, 70 is the 70 ksi (about 480 MPa) minimum weld-metal tensile strength, 1 is all-position capability, and the final 8 sets the low-hydrogen basic coating run on AC or DCEP. Yield is 58 ksi minimum and elongation 22 percent. The basic flux holds diffusible hydrogen below 16 ml per 100 g, so it resists cold cracking in restrained joints on H36-grade plate. Electrodes are baked and held in heated quivers; rebaking at about 350 C restores moisture-spoiled sticks.
