X-ray scanning

X-ray scanning is a non-intrusive inspection method customs use to image the contents of containers, vehicles, and parcels without opening them, screening for contraband, undeclared goods, and security threats. High-energy systems for laden containers and trucks use X-ray or gamma-ray sources at fixed gantries, mobile units, or rail portals, while smaller cabinet machines scan parcels and baggage. Operators read the radioscopic image against the declaration and the manifest, referring anomalies for physical examination. Non-intrusive inspection lets customs check a high share of cargo with minimal delay, supporting the risk-based control and immediate-release model promoted by the WCO.
