First-century vessels excavated in Germany.
Roman river craft excavated near Xanten on the lower Rhine in Germany, site of the colony Colonia Ulpia Traiana and the legionary base Vetera. Finds of timber from Roman vessels and harbor structures, including material associated with the nearby De Meern and Woerden Rhine boats of the wider Limes region, document military and supply shipping on the Rhine frontier in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The LVR-Archaeological Park and Roman Museum at Xanten conserves and displays regional finds.
