Xunta de Galicia Maritime Department
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Spanish regional maritime authority.
The Xunta de Galicia is the regional government of Galicia in northwest Spain; its maritime competence sits in the Consellería do Mar, which administers fisheries, shellfish gathering, aquaculture, fishing-port management, and coastal-zone matters within Galicia’s devolved powers. Galicia is one of Europe’s largest fishing regions, landing through ports such as Vigo and A Coruña. The department handles regional fisheries licensing and the cofradías (fishers’ guilds); deep-sea shipping and seafarer certification remain Spanish national competences under the Dirección General de la Marina Mercante.
