Yokohama Fender

A Yokohama fender is a large pneumatic floating fender, a rubber air-filled cylinder with steel-reinforced ends, used to keep two vessels apart during ship-to-ship (STS) transfers and to cushion berthing at exposed terminals. The name comes from the Yokohama Rubber Company, which commercialized the pneumatic fender; the type is covered by ISO 17357-1 for high-pressure pneumatic fenders. Standard sizes range up to about 3.3 by 6.5 meters, and they absorb berthing energy by compressing the trapped air at a controlled internal pressure.
