Younger Edda Maritime References

The Younger Edda, or Prose Edda, is the Old Norse handbook of poetics and mythology compiled by Snorri Sturluson in Iceland around 1220, and a source for Norse ship lore. Its Skaldskaparmal section lists poetic terms (heiti) and kennings for ship, sea, and seafaring used by the skalds, and recounts the god Freyr’s ship Skidbladnir, built by dwarfs to fold like cloth, and the giant ship Naglfar of myth. The work preserves the maritime vocabulary of the Viking Age alongside the Poetic Edda, the older verse collection.
