AI Route Optimization

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Machine-learning weather-routing systems.

Machine-learning weather routing that picks the speed and track minimizing fuel, time, or emissions across a gridded metocean forecast. It pairs numerical weather prediction (wind, wave, current fields) with the vessel’s speed-power and seakeeping response, then solves for the least-cost path, updating as forecasts refresh. Commercial systems include StormGeo BVS and NAPA Voyage Optimization. The physics is older than the AI label: the cost surface is dominated by added wave resistance and the cube law linking speed to power.
