Sail Plan Optimization

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Algorithmic departure time/route choice.

Choosing the departure time, route, and speed profile that minimizes a voyage cost (fuel, time, or emissions) given the metocean forecast and the ship’s speed-power and seakeeping response. Here ‘sail plan’ means the voyage plan, not canvas; the same weather-routing calculus applies, balancing added wave resistance and just-in-time arrival against the cube law linking speed to power. Slowing to hit a port slot can cut fuel sharply, since power scales near the third power of speed. It is voluntary operational optimization, not a regulated procedure.
