Air receiver

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Pressurized vessel storing starting air at typically 30 bar.

An air receiver is a pressure vessel that stores compressed starting air, typically at 30 bar, for admission to the main and auxiliary engine cylinders to crank them on starting. SOLAS and class rules require enough stored air for a set number of consecutive starts without recharging (commonly twelve for a reversible main engine), held in at least two receivers. The vessel carries a relief valve, fusible plug, and drain, and feeds the engine through the air start system.
