Emergency diesel generator
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Independent set serving emergency switchboard per SOLAS.
An emergency diesel generator is a self-contained generating set that feeds the emergency switchboard when the main source of electrical power fails, required by SOLAS Ch II-1 Reg 42 (passenger ships) and Reg 43 (cargo ships). It must start automatically and accept load within 45 seconds of main-power loss and supply the emergency services for 18 hours on cargo ships and 36 hours on passenger ships. The fuel flashpoint must be at least 43 C. It is located above the bulkhead deck, outside main machinery spaces, with its own fuel, cooling, and starting systems so a single casualty cannot disable both the main and emergency supplies.
