Annex VI

A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexes

Definition

Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships.

MARPOL Annex VI, the Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships, entered into force on 19 May 2005 and was comprehensively revised by MEPC.176(58), effective 1 July 2010. It caps fuel sulphur (Regulation 14), limits engine NOx by tier (Regulation 13 with the NOx Technical Code 2008), and controls ODS, VOCs, incineration, and shipboard fuel quality. The 2011 amendments under MEPC.203(62) added Chapter 4, introducing the EEDI and SEEMP. Chapter 4 was extended by MEPC.328(76) in 2021 to add the EEXI and the operational Carbon Intensity Indicator, both in force from 1 January 2023.
