Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII)

A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexes

Definition

Operational indicator under MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 4.

The Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is the operational efficiency metric for ships of 5,000 GT and above, introduced into MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 4 by MEPC.328(76) and in force from 1 January 2023. The attained CII is annual CO2 emissions divided by transport work (capacity times distance), expressed in grams CO2 per deadweight-mile or capacity-mile. Each ship receives a rating from A to E against a required CII that tightens each year along the MEPC.338(76) reduction-factor line. Ships rated D for three consecutive years or E for one year must submit a corrective action plan in the SEEMP Part III.
