Anti-Fouling System Certificate

A4. Other IMO and ILO conventions and codes

Definition

Required under AFS for ships of 400 GT and above.

The International Anti-fouling System Certificate (IAFS Certificate) attests that a ship’s anti-fouling system complies with the AFS Convention, which bans organotin biocides such as tributyltin (TBT) acting as biocides in hull coatings. The AFS Convention, 2001 was adopted in London on 5 October 2001 and entered into force on 17 September 2008. Ships of 400 GT and above on international voyages carry the IAFS Certificate after an initial survey; vessels of 24 meters or more but under 400 GT carry instead a Declaration on Anti-fouling Systems with supporting documentation. The 2021 amendments added cybutryne to the controlled list.
