AP Moller-Maersk Decarbonization Strategy

AP Moller-Maersk’s decarbonization strategy sets a net-zero greenhouse gas target for 2040 across its business, against a 2022 baseline, with interim 1.5C-aligned targets for 2030. The fleet plan centers on dual-fuel methanol vessels that cut emissions 65% to 90% when run on bio- or e-methanol versus conventional fuel oil. Maersk added 10 dual-fuel methanol ships in 2025 for a fleet of 19, with further newbuildings on order for delivery through 2030, and has signed green-fuel offtake agreements to secure supply. The strategy is one of the most aggressive among container lines, but hinges on scaling green-methanol production that remains supply-constrained and costlier than fossil fuel.
