Coastal state rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
UNCLOS Article 56 defines coastal-state rights in the exclusive economic zone, the area beyond the territorial sea out to 200 nautical miles from the baselines. The coastal state holds sovereign rights to explore, exploit, conserve, and manage living and non-living natural resources of the waters, seabed, and subsoil, plus rights over energy production from water, currents, and winds. It also has jurisdiction over artificial islands, marine scientific research, and protection of the marine environment, exercised with due regard to other states’ rights.
