Bilge separator (15 ppm)

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Oily water separator per MEPC.107(49).

A 15 ppm bilge separator is the oil-filtering equipment that cleans machinery-space bilge water to below 15 parts per million of oil before overboard discharge, required by MARPOL Annex I Regulation 14 on every ship above 400 GT. The unit combines gravity coalescing with a fine coalescer or membrane stage and is paired with a 15 ppm oil content monitor that triggers an automatic three-way stopping valve when effluent exceeds 15 ppm, recirculating to the bilge holding tank. Type approval and testing follow IMO resolution MEPC.107(49) as amended by MEPC.285(70).
