BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System)
X139. Maritime Cybersecurity, OT Threats and StandardsDefinition
Required by SOLAS V/19.2.2.3, a watchkeeping monitor whose alarm logic is a candidate target for tampering.
The BNWAS monitors bridge watchkeeping activity and raises a graduated alarm if the officer of the watch becomes incapacitated. After a dormant period (3 to 12 minutes) it prompts on the bridge, then escalates to the master and other officers, and finally to all crew. SOLAS V/19.2.2.3 phased in the carriage requirement from 1 July 2011 by ship size and build date, with performance standards in IMO Resolution MSC.128(75). The system must run automatically whenever the ship’s heading or track-control system is engaged, and only the master can switch it off.
