The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, in its 1974 form as amended, is the principal IMO treaty on ship safety, tracing back to the response to the 1912 Titanic loss. Its chapters cover construction and subdivision (II-1), fire protection (II-2), lifesaving (III), radiocommunications (IV), safety of navigation (V), carriage of cargoes (VI) and dangerous goods (VII), nuclear ships (VIII), safety management (IX), high-speed craft (X), maritime security (XI-1 and XI-2), bulk carriers (XII), verification (XI-1), and polar waters (XIV). Amendments use the tacit acceptance procedure to enter force.
