Carrier Battle Group (CBG)

E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcement

Definition

Carrier-centered formation with escorts.

A US Navy formation centered on an aircraft carrier (CVN) and its embarked air wing, screened by guided-missile cruisers (CG) and destroyers (DDG), with one or more attack submarines (SSN) and a replenishment ship for sustainment. The carrier provides strike, air superiority, and surveillance; the escorts provide anti-air, anti-submarine, and anti-surface defense layered around it. The Navy redesignated the carrier battle group as the carrier strike group (CSG) in 2004, a smaller and more flexible standing organization.
