Caterpillar 3500 series
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Medium-speed marine diesel family.
The Caterpillar 3500 series is a high-speed four-stroke V-engine family with a 170 mm bore and 190 mm stroke, built in 8, 12, and 16-cylinder versions (3508, 3512, 3516). Rated roughly 1,000 to 2,500 kW at 1,200 to 1,800 rpm, it serves marine propulsion, auxiliary generator, and offshore power duties. The later 3500C and 3500E variants add electronic unit injection and twin turbocharging for tighter fuel burn and IMO Tier II compliance, with Tier III via selective catalytic reduction. It burns marine gas oil or marine diesel oil rather than heavy fuel oil, suiting workboats, tugs, ferries, and offshore vessels.
