Marine gas oil (MGO)

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

DMA distillate fuel per ISO 8217.

Marine gas oil is a distillate marine fuel meeting the ISO 8217 DMA grade, a clear low-viscosity product burned without preheating, unlike residual heavy fuel oil. MGO has a viscosity around 1.5 to 6.0 cSt at 40 C, a flashpoint of at least 60 C, and sulfur low enough to meet the 0.10 percent emission-control-area limit and the 0.50 percent global cap under MARPOL Annex VI Reg 14. Ships use MGO in auxiliary engines, emergency diesel generators, emergency fire pumps, boilers, and for main-engine maneuvering or ECA transit. It is cleaner-burning than HFO but costs more per tonne.
