CCAMLR

D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resources

Definition

Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources manages fishing in the Southern Ocean under a 1982 convention that is unusual for being explicitly ecosystem-based: catch limits for Antarctic krill account for the needs of penguins, seals, and whales that depend on it. CCAMLR sets conservation measures for krill and toothfish, runs a catch documentation scheme against IUU toothfish, and has designated large marine protected areas including the Ross Sea region MPA agreed in 2016.
