Krill Fishery
D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resourcesDefinition
Antarctic krill harvest regulated by CCAMLR.
The Antarctic krill fishery harvests Euphausia superba in the Southern Ocean for aquafeed, fishmeal, and omega-3 oil, managed by CCAMLR under a precautionary catch limit far below estimated biomass. The trigger-level cap of 620,000 tonnes for the main Area 48 subareas restricts concentration of effort near penguin and seal foraging grounds. Because krill sits at the base of the Antarctic food web, its management is the clearest working example of ecosystem-based fishery management.
