CEMT class

A CEMT class is the European standard grade for an inland waterway, set by the European Conference of Ministers of Transport in 1992 and running from Class I to Class VII. Each class fixes the maximum dimensions of the vessel or pushed convoy a waterway and its locks can pass, not a tonnage band directly. Class I follows the historic Freycinet gauge near 38.5 m length. Class IV admits an 80 to 85 m vessel of 9.5 m beam. Class Va takes a 110 m vessel of 11.4 m beam, and Class Vb a pushed convoy of 172 to 185 m. Planners use the class to size lock chambers, bridge clearances, and channel cross sections.
