SOLAS Chapter IV requires ships to carry radio equipment under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), with the equipment fit determined by the sea areas (A1 to A4) in which the ship trades. It mandates distress alerting, search-and-rescue coordination, and maritime safety information reception through systems such as NAVTEX, EPIRB, and satellite services.
