A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System under SOLAS Chapter IV.
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System is the international framework of radio communication for distress alerting and safety, mandatory under SOLAS Chapter IV. It integrates satellite and terrestrial systems so a ship in distress can raise the alarm automatically and coordinate rescue. Equipment carriage is keyed to the sea areas (A1 within VHF coast-station range through A4 in polar regions) where the ship operates.
